Material basics

What is copper-clad steel wire?

Copper-clad steel (CCS) is a composite conductor with a steel core and a copper outer layer. Specify its electrical properties, dimensions and material condition together; the name alone is not a complete supply specification.

Application basics

What is tracer wire?

Tracer wire provides a conductive route alongside a non-metallic utility so that a compatible locating system can identify the route. The conductor, insulation and connections need to be specified as a complete system.

Material comparison

Copper-clad steel vs copper: what to compare

Compare CCS and copper against the same project requirements and test basis. There is no universal same-size substitution: electrical performance, mechanical properties, connections and system acceptance must be reviewed together.

Reading specifications

CCS 21%, 30% and 40% IACS: what the numbers mean

21%, 30% and 40% IACS are conductivity designations. They are not copper percentages, layer-thickness percentages or a complete wire specification. General Clad’s published catalog also includes other conductivity classes.

Manufacturing review

CCS manufacturing process — what to verify

A CCS process must produce the specified core, copper layer, interface and finished-wire properties. A process description does not replace product measurements or a qualification record for the ordered grade and size.

Material condition

Soft and hard CCS — specify the actual condition

Soft or annealed and hard-drawn describe material condition. They do not, by themselves, define copper-layer thickness, copper fraction, conductivity or a universal strength value.

Read the guide
Copper-layer requirements

Copper-layer thickness in CCS — define the inspection basis

Copper-layer thickness is a physical dimension. Copper fraction is a material proportion, and %IACS is electrical conductivity. Specify and verify them as separate fields.

Mechanical performance

Tensile strength of CCS — test the relevant construction

CCS tensile strength must be stated for a defined material condition, geometry and test method. Mechanical strength does not establish conductivity, ampacity or a universal current-carrying rating.

Quality evidence

CCS quality control — evidence that matches the product

Useful quality evidence identifies the exact product or sample, the method, the measured result and the acceptance limit. Generic descriptions of equipment or certifications do not establish conformity of an ordered conductor.

Tracer-system planning

Installing pipe tracer wire — plan the approved system

Tracer-wire installation follows the approved project design, operator requirements and instructions for the actual wire, connector and locating equipment. There is no universal splice procedure or access-point spacing for every installation.

Conductor construction

3, 7 and 19 strands — define the full CCS conductor

Strand count is one construction parameter. It does not, by itself, define conductor area, conductivity, current capacity or strength. Compare the complete construction under the same duty and test conditions.

01 / UNDERSTAND THE NUMBERS

% IACS is not copper content.

% IACS expresses electrical conductivity relative to the International Annealed Copper Standard. Copper content describes how much copper is present, on a stated volume or mass basis.

40% IACS

An electrical property

A conductivity class. It does not mean the wire contains 40% copper.

% by volume / mass

A material proportion

The fraction of copper in a composite. Always state the basis of the percentage.

Keep conductivity, copper fraction, dimensions and resistance as separate fields in your specification.

02 / COMPARE ON A DEFINED BASIS

What does “copper equivalent” mean?

Ask which property is being compared and under what conditions. Equal DC resistance at a stated temperature is a specific comparison; it does not by itself establish equivalent ampacity, short-circuit performance or connection behavior.

  • State actual conductor area and construction.
  • Compare resistance at the same temperature and length.
  • Validate electrical duty, connections and installation separately.

03 / PREPARE YOUR PROJECT

04 / QUALIFICATION

Ask for evidence that matches the product.

Request the current datasheet and applicable test documentation for the precise grade and construction under review. Keep the sample, specification and test report linked throughout qualification.

05 / COMMON QUESTIONS

Before you make the change.

How are General Clad and Raytron Group related?

General Clad is the Raytron Group brand specializing in copper-clad steel manufacturing. General Clad provides CCS product specifications and application inquiries. Raytron Group presents the broader materials portfolio, including copper-clad aluminum, nickel-clad copper and photovoltaic ribbon.

Can CCS replace copper at the same size?

There is no universal same-size substitution. Compare the required resistance, electrical duty, mechanical performance, connections and applicable project requirements before making a change.

Is copper-clad wire the same as copper-plated wire?

The material structure and copper-layer characteristics need to be identified explicitly. Do not treat “clad” and “plated” as interchangeable procurement descriptions; ask for the construction and inspection criteria.

How should I specify CCA or CCAA copper content?

State whether the copper fraction is by volume or by mass. Keep it separate from conductivity and include the required dimensions and resistance.

Can I request samples and technical documents?

Yes. Send the application, target specification and trial quantity so the team can review the grade, availability, documentation and sample requirements.

Are all grades available in every listed size?

Availability depends on grade, temper, construction and packaging. Confirm the exact combination in the current quotation and approved specification.
