Keep three quantities separate
| Quantity | What it describes | How to state it |
|---|---|---|
| % IACS | Electrical conductivity relative to the International Annealed Copper Standard | State the conductivity requirement and acceptance basis. |
| Copper content | Amount of copper in the composite | State whether the fraction is by mass or by volume. |
| Copper-layer thickness | Physical dimensions of the copper outer layer | State the thickness or layer inspection criteria and units. |
Review the complete catalog
The published General Clad grade directory includes 21, 25, 30, 32, 35, 40, 53 and 55% IACS. A discussion of three classes does not define the whole portfolio.
The 40% IACS round-wire listing gives 0.06–5 mm diameter; the other seven grade records give 0.06–6.54 mm. These are catalog references; confirm the current combination of diameter, condition and performance for your request.
A higher designation is not the whole selection
Choose the grade together with required resistance, actual dimensions, mechanical properties, copper-layer requirements and processing conditions. Application approval depends on the complete conductor or cable.
Do not map a conductivity number directly to a fixed use, price saving or service-life promise without the relevant specification and qualification evidence.
Write an unambiguous requirement
- Preferred % IACS class, or maximum DC resistance if that is the governing requirement.
- Finished diameter and tolerance.
- Material condition and mechanical requirements.
- Copper-layer or copper-fraction requirements on a stated basis.
- Application and acceptance documentation.
This guide supports initial specification review. Confirm current product data, availability and application acceptance for the exact conductor under consideration.
