Copper-clad steel (CCS) wire combines a steel core with an outer copper layer. Material selection involves both electrical performance and mechanical requirements.
Application requirements
For grounding and tracer-wire projects, define the conductor construction, installation environment and connection method. For telecommunications, specify the operating frequency and required electrical performance. Railway and other mechanically demanding applications also need a defined load case.
These application categories identify subjects for engineering review. They do not establish that a particular grade is suitable for every installation.
Information to include in an inquiry
Provide the application, wire diameter or conductor size, solid or stranded construction, required conductivity and mechanical properties. Include surface finish, insulation, environmental exposure and any applicable project specification.
Compare complete specifications
A nominal conductivity such as 30% IACS or 40% IACS describes an electrical property. It does not state copper content, copper-layer thickness or allowable current. Compare the complete specification and request the relevant test evidence for the proposed construction.
Discuss a CCS application: send your project requirements so the material and documentation can be reviewed.
