ASTM B228: defining the scope of a CCS conductor test review

Original publication: · Reviewed:

Confirm the conductor construction, specified ASTM B228 edition and required documentation before reviewing a CCS test report.

ASTM B228 addresses bare, concentric-lay-stranded conductors made from round copper-clad steel wires. Identify the product construction before deciding whether this specification is relevant.

Define the requirement

Record the standard edition specified by the purchase order or project, the conductor grade and its construction. A reference to ASTM B228 on a website does not establish that every CCS wire is covered or compliant.

Request traceable evidence

A useful review package identifies the batch, specimen, measured results, test methods and acceptance criteria. Ask the supplier to explain which records apply to the component wires and which apply to the finished stranded conductor.

This review checklist is an editorial aid. The applicable standard and agreed specification determine the actual test requirements and limits.

Separate additional tests and claims

If adhesion or corrosion testing is requested, identify its method, conditions and acceptance criteria. Do not assume that a salt-spray test is a universal ASTM B228 requirement.

Compliance statements should identify their scope and supporting evidence. A test report is not, by itself, an independent certification or a guarantee of service life.

Discuss documentation: send the specified edition, conductor construction and evidence required for your project.
