Plated copper and CCS wire — core and coating selection

Specify the core and the coating separately. Similar surface appearance does not define the same conductor.

Choose the complete material structure

The published General Clad plated-wire range includes copper and CCS substrates, with single-wire and stranded forms. The legacy catalogue also names silver, nickel and tin plating. Do not assume that every plated item uses a steel core.

Silver-plated CCS and silver-clad copper describe different structures. Nickel plating is also distinct from a nickel-clad copper material. Identify the required base material, conductivity, construction and surface process explicitly.

  • Copper or CCS substrate
  • Single wire or stranded construction
  • Coating metal, minimum thickness and permitted variation

Qualify the surface for the job

Review coating adhesion, continuity, surface condition and the requirements of joining or downstream processing. Confirm the relevant test methods, sample condition and acceptance criteria.

For elevated temperature or other demanding duties, qualify the finished conductor and termination against the actual system specification. A coating name alone does not establish a temperature rating or application approval.

  • Coating thickness and inspection method
  • Soldering or joining process and surface requirements
  • Operating environment, packaging and traceable test evidence
